Torfaen Youth Service has been nominated to attend the Youth Work Excellence Awards in Conwy, Wales on the 28 June 2019.

The category ‘Outstanding Youth Work Projects – promoting Health and Well-being’ saw Torfaen ‘Young Parents’ group being shortlisted down to the final 3.

The young parents group is made of young Mums and Dads who feel that they have not got the confidence to join a main stream toddler group.

Torfaen Youth Service provides a door to door service to reduce the financial costs of young parents catching public transport. During the sessions parents have access to professional health information, well-being and fitness programmes, courses to enable future employment, support in baby lead weaning, independent living skills and arts and crafts.

The group is peer lead where ideas are shared and they provide a 24/7 support group should the parents have any concerns. The group also works closely with the NHS Teenage Midwife, Sports Development and Inspire2Achieve projects.

Cllr Amanda Owen Executive Member for Children, Families & Communities said, ‘It’s a real honour to be shortlisted from hundreds of submissions. The project is so valuable to the young people it supports and we’re all very proud.’

David Williams, Youth Service Manager added, ‘The group is going from strength to strength and I am so proud of all the staff and young people alike.'
