Lauren Grindlay - Torfaen MYP for 2019-20

An incredible opportunity has opened up for young people to stand for election to become Torfaen’s next Member of Youth parliament (MYP).

To stand for election a young person must be between 11 and 18 years of age and live, work or attend education in Torfaen.

Upon successful election, the elected young person will be expected to become a member of Torfaen Young People’s Forum to ensure issues are joined up with the wider vision in Torfaen.

Duties over the next 12 months will include:

  • MYP to encourage young people across Torfaen to take part in the ‘Make Your Mark’ youth ballot (August – October 2020)
  • MYP to attend the UK Youth Parliament sitting in the House of Commons (November 2020)
  • MYP to start a local campaign to address top issues raised in the youth ballot. (January 2021)

Members of Youth Parliament also get the chance to attend residentials throughout the year, gaining valuable skills for public speaking and debating, and to identify issues for the youth ballot.

All costs associated with the role are covered by the British Youth Council, Children in Wales and Torfaen CBC.

Torfaen Executive Member for Corporate Governance & Performance, Cllr Joanne Gauden said: "Every young person in Torfaen should consider this exciting opportunity to stand as a candidate for election as a Member of Youth Parliament. Whatever their background, politics or interests, the candidates have a fantastic opportunity to be the voice of Torfaen young people.

'I urge every young person to make good use of the democratic process and have their say by casting their vote for their favoured candidate. The successful candidate will gain unique experiences and skills that will serve them well in preparation for future roles.'

Torfaen's Participation Officer for Children & Young People, Rhiannon Bennett said, 'I have been fortunate in supporting three young people whilst they have been Members of Youth Parliament for Torfaen. Each one has brought something new to the role and has gained immeasurably from the experience.

I would like to stress that the MYP role is an issue based role, not a party political role. The appointed young person will need to spend time listening to the views of young people and will debate these issues at Youth Parliament in the House of Commons and locally.'

Anyone wishing to stand for election must contact Rhiannon by either emailing: or by calling 07980682699.

The deadline date for registering interest is Friday 7  March 2020.
