Cardiff Council has opened consultation on a proposed scheme to introduce pay and display parking on Lloyd George Avenue, in Butetown.
The proposed change involves closing the inside lane going northbound from Cardiff Bay to the city centre, in order to create the new ‘nose to tail' parking spaces. The current southbound, city centre to Cardiff Bay, side of Lloyd George Avenue would be opened for traffic to use in both directions.
Traffic calming would be installed on the northbound lane that would be used to access the new parking spaces. This would keep speeds down and deter drivers from using it as a through route to the city centre.
The proposed scheme would have 92 Pay & Display parking spaces, with additional space for approximately 14 vehicles allocated for Blue Badge holders.
A Cardiff Council spokesperson, said: "Altering the use of the road space would create new parking for visitors to Cardiff Bay and the city centre.Lloyd George Avenue is usually very quiet, which canresult in speeding and other anti-social driving, and the changes would also create a road layout in keeping with the residential environment."
Buses would continue to use Lloyd George Avenue, with new stops included in the designs. A small area of the central reservation would be needed to create one of the bus stops, with the rest of the green spaces along the avenue retained. All of the current pedestrian crossings and road junctions would also remain in place.
The two-way traffic section of the current southbound side of Lloyd-George Avenue would run between the junctions with Tyndall Street and Hemingway Road. The proposed parking on the northbound side would start at the Ffordd Garthorne junction.
