Seven Arrested As Armed Cops Swoop On Drug Gang Suspects

Tuesday 25th Feb 2020

Members of a suspected County Lines drug gang have been arrested after West Midlands Police cops swooped on two vehicles in Birmingham this morning (4 Dec).

Police took a call at 12.45am from a member of the public reporting a group of men acting suspiciously in a Vauxhall Astra and Mercedes near the junction of Brunswick and Ladypool Road in Sparkhill.

The cars moved away but were monitored from above by the force helicopter which directed armed officers on the ground.

The Mercedes was pulled over on Belgrave Middleway near Longmore Street and a search of the car uncovered two machetes and a quantity of cash.

Three men were arrested – two from Leicester aged 18 and 23, plus a 25-year-old from Alum Rock – on suspicion of weapons possession and money laundering.

Armed colleagues attempted to pull the red Astra over in Bristol Road but the driver rammed their police car and sped away before crashing in Pershore Road.

Four men were arrested, including a 22-year-old Leicester man detained in Odell Place who was chased down by officers after he tried to flee the scene.

Another 22-year-old from Leicester, a 26-year-old from Aston and a 21-year-old from Bordesley – believed to have been the driver – were also arrested.

They remain in West Midlands Police custody this morning on the same charges, plus dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

West Midlands Police Detective Adam Jobson, said: “A quick 999 call from a member of the public reporting suspicious activity meant we could direct armed units to the scene with support from the force helicopter.

“Very quickly we’ve managed to get seven suspects in custody and recover two machetes…a fantastic job all round.

“Some of these men are from the Leicester area so we’ll be looking into exactly what brought them to a street corner in Birmingham in the early hours of the morning.”

One officer suffered a foot injury while trying to stop the Astra as it rammed a police vehicle; he was treated in hospital before being discharged.
