Joined by Keep Wales Tidy (KWT) and Anglesey Council’s Waste Management Section they collected a staggering 16 bags of rubbish. They are now producing posters that will be displayed by local retailers in the town to encourage people not to drop litter in the park where children play on the way to, and from school. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Children in Amlwch Primary School play in Amlwch Park regularly on their way to school and at the end of the school day. The park has a playground, tennis courts and even a skateboard park. Despite lots of litterbins and even recycling banks there is a big litter problem in the park and the school children have decided to do something about it. Today 28 children, armed with bags and litter pickers, set about cleaning the park up and collected 16 bags of rubbish in just one hour. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The clean-up was supported by Keep Wales Tidy and Anglesey Council’s Waste Management Section. Gareth Owen from KWT said: “It was shocking how much litter there was in the park and it is all food, drink and smoking related from bottles to chip trays and cigarette ends. The children have done a great job tidying the park up and we are supporting their campaign to stop people dropping litter in the park.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The park clean-up has become a project in the bid to become an Eco-school. Gwawr Llewelyn, School Teacher, said: “We began working towards becoming an Eco-school 3 months ago and all the children have worked really hard to achieve the award. They are now designing a poster that local stores and take away restaurants will be displaying to encourage people not to litter the park.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The posters will feature a picture of the children with the rubbish that has been dropped by people littering. “I hope that the people littering the park think about the children from Amlwch Primary School. There are a number of bins in the park they can use. Some of the litter includes broken glass bottles that can cause injury to a child playing in the park. Littering is an offence and you can report it using an environmental crime report form,” said Elin Owen, Senior Waste Management Officer. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Children from the school will be visiting the park again in 4 weeks to check that the littering has stopped and their message to people using the park is ‘have fun, but keep our park clean’. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
