Teaching capacity is being increased at two Anglesey schools caught up in the recent RAAC concrete crisis.
Site surveys and planning work has been underway at both Ysgol David Hughes, at Menai Bridge, and Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi, at Holyhead.
The presence of RAAC was confirmed at the schools earlier this month, which meant they were initially forced to close.
At Ysgol David Hughes scaffolding work was completed with the aim of providing access to its sixth form area by the start of this week.
A statement from Anglesey Council said it was hoped “it will help to release additional space to provide more teaching capacity within the school”.
At Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi remedial work to the cafeteria also began yesterday and should take around three weeks.
When complete it should allow full access to the cafeteria.
The school has also introduced a phased programme to carry out remedial works to the other RAAC-affected areas of the school as soon as possible.
The council added that the school aimed “to increase access to face-to-face teaching by one year group” from Monday [September 25].
Online learning will continue to be provided to the year groups not in the school building during the week.
Anglesey Chief Executive Dylan J Williams said: “We continue to work closely with both head teachers and are intensely aware of the challenges faced by pupils, parents and school staff.
“We have made good progress at both David Hughes and Caergybi; but unfortunately, it will take time to implement works which will allow further use of these buildings.
“We are working closely with the school community, external contractors and colleagues in Welsh Government to find sustainable and, more importantly, safe solutions to these RAAC problems.”
Council Leader Councillor Llinos Medi added: “We recognise that there is frustration at the situation and thank everyone for their patience and understanding.
“Please rest assured that we are doing everything we can, as quickly as we can, to ensure a safe return to face-to-face learning for all pupils.”
Given the evolving nature of developments relating to RAAC within Ysgol David Hughes and Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi, Anglesey County Council is publishing updates.
