The Love Where You Live Campaign has cleared 5.4 tonnes of extra waste from the Canton area in a week. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Nineteen and a half tonnes of extra waste, on top of normal cleansing operations, has now been removed from Cathays, Butetown, Grangetown and Canton since the neighbourhood deep cleans were launched on September 19. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The City Council’s neighbourhood services team took to the streets of Canton between Monday Oct 10th and Friday October 15th, where the following work was carried out: ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

• 26 streets and lanes deep cleaned
• Sanatorium Road Playing Fields cleaned
• 340 gullies were cleansed and,
• 1 pavement defect was repaired ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Enforcement activity was also carried out during the Canton blitz which will see one property investigated for waste issues in front/rear gardens, and another property being monitored over the next few weeks. Education action was taken on two occasions. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The enforcement team also investigated 15 incidences of domestic waste presented incorrectly and three incidences of fly-tipping, but no evidence was found which could lead to a fine. Waste transfer notes were requested on 33 occasions from commercial businesses, which collect waste, to ensure they were operating legitimately. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The Blitzes involve street cleansing, highways, parks and enforcement officers working together to clean wards on top of normal cleansing routines. The teams are visiting the eight inner wards of the city on a weekly rotational basis. Each time they return to a ward they will clean a new area. The city’s outer wards are also receiving additional cleansing in areas of high footfall such as shop fronts. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The teams will move into Riverside from Monday October 17 and a community clean up will take place as part of the blitz in Kitchener Gardens on Thursday, October 20, between 10am and 12 Noon. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Cllr Bob Derbyshire, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“The campaign is building up a real head of steam and we are beginning to see lots of people get in touch with us looking to put on their own litter picks. This is great to see. Feedback from residents so far has been very encouraging. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“We want to encourage more residents to Love Where they Live and we will continue to promote and support existing groups and any new groups which want to set up. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“Also, if you know anyone who you think deserves to go up on a billboard for loving their neighbourhood and helping to keep it tidy, then please let us know through the Keep Cardiff Tidy website. Just get in touch and tell us why they deserve our thanks. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
