Junior GoTri Proves A Hit

Pembrokeshire may very well have Olympic triathletes to rival the legacy laid down by the Brownlee brothers, Non Stanford and Vicky Holland if the success of the recent Princes Gate Junior GoTri Events is anything to go by. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The events, aimed at introducing the sport of triathlon to children aged 7-15 are a continuation of the Inspire Mark Award that was awarded to Pembrokeshire Leisure, Pembrokeshire County Council’s Sports and Leisure arm, in 2012. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Pembrokeshire Leisure was awarded the Inspire Mark Award in recognition of the legacy programme in place following the London Olympics. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Over 150 young athletes took part in a range of challenges ranging from a Duathlon (run-cycle-run) in Scolton Manor, an Aquathon at Haverfordwest Leisure Centre (swim-run) and a triathlon (swim-cycle-run) at Pembroke Leisure Centre. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Distances for the races varied depending on the age of the child. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The races were run in conjunction with Pembrokeshire Tristars. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Triathlon is one of the UK’s fastest growing sports and Pembrokeshire is playing its part in helping the sport thrive,” said cabinet member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, Councillor Elwyn Morse. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The GoTri series for adults has been a success for many years and I’ve no doubt these junior races will continue to do so for years to come too. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Who knows, one of these triathletes may be a star of the 2024 Olympic Games.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
