Sports Camps At The Start Of The School Holidays

Over 140 children from across Pembrokeshire took part in two 3-day inclusive sports camps at the start of the school holidays. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The camps, held at Fishguard Leisure Centre and Taskers’ Dome were run by Pembrokeshire County Council’s Sport Pembrokeshire & Pembrokeshire Leisure departments to increase the number of children who become ‘hooked on sport for life.’ ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Children participated in a wide range of Olympic and Paralympic Sports and physical activity ranging from tennis to street dance, golf to seated volleyball, football and tennis plus tag rugby to name a few. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The sessions were delivered by Sport Pembrokeshire staff and professional coaches from Haverfordwest Golf Club, Newport Golf Club and FF Dancers. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Pembrokeshire County Council Spokesman for Culture, Sort and Leisure Councillor Elwyn Morse was delighted with the turnout to the courses and the attitude of those attending. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The camps had been really well attended and exposed children to a vast array of sports which are currently being showcased in the Rio Olympic Games and in the Paralympics over the coming weeks. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“I’ve no doubt they will all be inspired from attending these camps and from watching their heroes on TV at the Olympics.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

His words were echoed by Active Young People Manager Matt Freeman who added. “It was encouraging to see the children enjoy themselves and we intend to continue to develop the sports camps across the county in other school holidays. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“This will this increase participation and provide opportunities for the children of Pembrokeshire to become “hooked on sport for life”. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
