Festival Of Remembrance
This year’s Rhondda Cynon Taf Festival of Remembrance takes place at the Park & Dare Theatre – the first time this venue has hosted the event.
The Festival of Remembrance, which takes place at 7pm on Sunday, November 6, will honour our Armed Forces past and present.
Organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, in association with the Royal British Legion, tickets are now on sale.
The annual event allows residents the opportunity to show their support for the Armed Forces Community and the Royal British Legion.
The 2016 Rhondda Cynon Taf Festival of Remembrance will feature The Regimental Band and Corps of Drums of the Royal Welsh, with Director of Music, Major Denis Burton.
The Regimental Band and Corps of Drums of the Royal Welsh have a versatility and style of repertoire which is both unique and highly popular – whether on parade as a marching band or on the concert platform playing marching and popular tunes.
The band is the last surviving all brass band left within British Army Music and are favourites at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff during the Six Nations rugby championship.
There will also be a performance by Cor Meibion Pendyrus, one of the finest choirs in Wales.
Formed in 1924 by two out-of-work miners Ben Jones and Emlyn Drew, at a time of poverty and mass unemployment, Cor Meibion Pendyrus has gone on to perform all around the world.
Named after two farms and the local colliery, Cor Meibion Pendyrus has toured the world and became the first Welsh choir to perform at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London in 1968.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Mayor, Cllr Rhys Lewis, said: “Our Festival of Remembrance Concert is always an important date in our calendar as we continue to support our Armed Forces personnel, at home and overseas, past and present.
“It is always a poignant time for remembrance, personal reflection and for giving thanks to all of our local people who are serving, or have served in the Armed Forces.
“They are always in our thoughts, wherever they are in the world and the annual Festival of Remembrance provides the perfect opportunity for our communities to acknowledge their dedication and bravery, as well as recognising the sterling work that is carried out all year around by the Royal British Legion.”
The Royal British Legion was formed in 1921, bringing together four national organisations of ex-Servicemen that had been established after the First World War.
Providing a valuable support service for the Armed Force and their families, the first Poppy Appeal took place was launched in November, 1921.
The Festival of Remembrance takes place at the Park & Dare Theatre, Treorchy, on Sunday, November 6 at 7pm. Doors open 6.30pm. Tickets are priced £6 and are available by calling the Box Office on 08000 147111 or from the Park & Dare Theatre. All proceeds raised on the night will go to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
