Small Number of Pupils Miss Out on First Choice Schools in Swansea and Carmarthenshire

news.wales / newyddion.cymru

The vast majority of new applications for primary schools places in Swansea and Carmarthenshire have been successful with only a small number unable to secure their first choice.
Only nine pupils starting primary school in September this year out of 1,942 didn’t get a place at their chosen school – seven at St Helen’s primary, Sandfields, and two and YGG Bryn y Mor, Brynmill – because they were oversubscribed.
The figures relate to applications which were submitted to the council on time. A council spokesman urged any parent who has still not applied for a reception place for their child to do so as soon as possible.
He added: “The very small number of on-time applications from families living in Swansea that did not secure a place at their first preference school have been offered a place at either their second preference or their designated catchment school in the language of their choice.
“Families can be assured that whichever school their child attends they will receive a good education in safe, secure, and happy surroundings.”
Carmarthenshire Council said only 12 applications in four primary schools were unsuccessful. A spokesman said they were all from pupils living outside of the relevant school’s catchment area and that five of the 12 were received after the January 31 closing date. He said: “We are anticipating a significant number of late applications from parents.”
Carmarthenshire Council declined from naming the four oversubscribed schools because it said doing so might identify the pupils involved because the numbers were so low.
Swansea Council provided this list of primary schools with admission numbers and places allocated.
