Primary School Applications Refusals Nearly Doubled in Vale of Glamorgan This Year

The number of primary school applications refused in Vale of Glamorgan nearly doubled this year compared to last year’s figures.
Gwenfo Church in Wales Primary School was one of the more popular primary schools in the county this year with Vale of Glamorgan Council having to turn away 11 applicants.
This was closely followed by Sully Primary School and Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg.
In total the council turned away 35 applications for the September 2024 intake. Last year 18 applicants were turned away.
The most popular primary schools among applicants in 2023 were Evenlode Primary School, which turned away seven, and Ysgol Dewi Sant, which turned away five.
There are still 30 primary schools with places available this year, according to statistics from the local authority on the 2024 intake.
Applications for primary schools in the Vale of Glamorgan opened on November 27, 2023, and parents had until January 22, 2024, to send their preferences to the council.
Offers were made and applicants were informed of refusals on Wednesday, April 17.
Waiting lists for primary schools will be established this month and the council has set a deadline of May 1 for parents to respond to offers.
Late and second preference applications will be processed in May and the council said results will be posted to applicants during the same month or in June.
A total of 1,255 applications were received by Vale of Glamorgan Council for preferred primary school places in the county this year.
Last year a total of 1,234 applications were received.
