Bonnets And Crinoline At Brecon Library
Staff at a south Powys library gave their customers a treat by dressing up in period costume to celebrate the 200th year of Charlotte Bronte’s birth.
Brecon Library staff donned home-made costumes to mark the occasion and set up a book display in the library to draw attention to the work of the famous author.
Born in 1816 during the Regency period, Charlotte Bronte’s work became popular during the Victorian period.
“We didn’t want this 200th anniversary to go unnoticed,” said Branch Librarian Susan Jones.
“We wanted to show everyone that great literature will stand the test of time and that Charlotte Bronte’s work has proved just as popular now as it was back then. Where would we be without the Bronte sisters and their wonderful contribution to literature?”
Susan made the bonnets and hats herself for each member of staff to get into the spirit. This went down well with several library customers.
Cllr Graham Brown, Cabinet Member for Library Services, said: “The library staff have made a great effort in Brecon, doing their bit to help make reading accessible and encouraging visitors and customers to pick up and read a book they haven’t tried.
“It’s good to view things in a fun way and draw attention to the author and her classic work.”
