Bridge repair work on A488 in South Shropshire delayed, expected to start soon

Work to repair a bridge on an A-road in south Shropshire has been delayed.
The A488 at New Invention, between Clun and Knighton, was due to be closed from August 3 to September 18 for maintenance work on the bridge.
Shropshire Council said a full road closure was required for the duration of the work due to the “narrow nature” of the A488.
There would be two phases, with the first one (due to be from August 3 to 18) involving the removal of the carriageway surfacing and footpath from the bridge deck. The bridge deck slab will then be assessed, with any necessary concrete repairs undertaken, followed by waterproofing works. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Once complete, the carriageway and footpaths will be reinstated. No vehicular traffic will be permitted to cross the bridge during the first phase.
However, Councillor Sam Walsmley, who represents Clun, said the closure has been delayed and work would now start either the end of the this week, or the beginning of next. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The closure would result in a 21.5-mile diversion route, pointing drivers through Clun and along the B4367 through Bedstone.
Councillor Walmsley said that while the closure is in place, he is aiming to get the Heras fencing on the right as you leave Clun moved further back from the road.
“Although I don’t believe it’s a formal Shropshire Council responsibility, I am keen to get it in a location where it doesn’t get hit by vehicles,” he said.
The second phase will involve work beneath the bridge, including bunding and  diversion of the watercourse to facilitate a sequence of concrete repairs to the bridge soffit.
Again, no vehicular traffic will be permitted to cross the bridge during this phase. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
