Cadw Grant Success For Llandrinio Bridge
Additional repair works will be carried out on a north Powys bridge thanks to a £15,000 grant, the county council has announced.
Repair works are currently being carried out on Llandrinio Bridge, which carries the B4393 over the River Severn, after the structure was damaged during flooding at the end of 2015.
Powys County Council successfully applied for a £15,000 grant from Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, to carry out the additional work to the bridge which has scheduled ancient monument status.
However, the additional repair works means that the current closure of the bridge during the day will need to be extended for a further two weeks.
Work on the bridge started in July which has seen the stonework repaired and repointing work carried out. The bridge has been closed from 8.30am to 6pm Monday to Fridays and re-opens in the evenings and weekends with the present weight and width restrictions continuing.
The current closure arrangements will remain in place while the additional repair works are carried out, which include pointing work to the large pier/foundation stone and repair work to the parapet which includes a stone repair and rebuild.
Cllr John Brunt, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “The council is facing financial pressures so this additional grant funding from the Welsh Government is excellent news. It will allow enhanced maintenance works to the bridge over and above the minimal repairs we were able to fund.
“We fully appreciate the inconvenience that the extended closure to the local community but I hope that they understand that the grant funding is good news as it allows us to complete works that we otherwise would not have been able to carry out at this time.
“Once the repair works are completed, the weight and width restrictions will be lifted and the bridge will be reopened to all traffic.”
