Council Urges Residents To Cycle To Work
Residents in Powys are being urged to ditch their cars and take to two wheels and cycle to work for at least one day later this month.
Powys County Council is supporting Cycle to Work Day, a national event that will be held on Wednesday 14 September. Cycle to Work Day aims to encourage everyone to take to two wheels and cycle to work for at least one day.
Cycle to Work Day takes place exactly one week after Powys hosted a Tour of Britain stage finish for the first time at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd.
For those who are less confident on two wheels, the council’s Road Safety Team run a free ‘On Your Bike’ scheme to help cyclists improve their road riding skill and confidence. For more details email road.safety@powys.gov.uk or telephone 01597 826640.
Cllr John Brunt, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We’re delighted to support Cycle to Work Day. Cycling to work is good for your health, your wallet and the environment.
“The number of people cycling to work regularly is growing, with 741,000 people in the UK regularly doing so. Cycle to Work Day aims to increase those numbers year by year and to one million by 2021.
“We want as many people and businesses as possible in the county to get on their bikes on Wednesday 14 September.”
Anyone who takes part in Cycle to Work Day can pledge their miles online www.cycletoworkday.org where they will be in for a chance to win a prize.
