Plans For A Massive Investment In Primary Education In East Powys
Plans for a massive investment in primary education in east Powys have been submitted for consideration, Powys County Council has confirmed.
Applications for five new primary schools being developed as part of a £24m investment in the Gwernyfed catchment area have been submitted to the Brecon Beacons National Park and the county council’s planning services.
An outline business case for the school construction programme was supported by the Welsh Government last autumn as part of the 21st Century Schools programme.
Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Arwel Jones said: “Submitting the planning applications is an exciting development and a clear indication that the project is on the move and that new schools for the catchment area will soon be a reality.
“If the planning applications are approved we will see five new schools built in the area replacing the current schools at Hay on Wye, Talgarth – to replace the current Talgarth and Bronllys schools – Clyro, Llyswen and Llangorse.
“The plans are a result of a detailed review of the area over the past few years demonstrating the need to address falling school numbers, inadequate buildings and address financial pressures. The investment is a clear indication of the council’s commitment to providing the best possible facilities for our young learners.”
Plans to demolish existing primary schools in Hay–on-Wye and Llangorse and build two new primary schools along with a new school at Talgarth have been submitted to Brecon Beacons Planning Authority.
Separate plans for new schools for Llangorse and Llyswen have been submitted to Powys County Council’s planning services.
The Council is still working towards submitting the Full Business Case in November 2016, and if approved, work on the new schools could start in 2017.
