Service users of a north Powys day centre have been visited by the Leader of Powys County Council.
Cllr Barry Thomas visited the Park Day Centre in Newtown last week where he met with the service users. While visiting the centre, he talked to a number of people who visit the centre and to Cllr Joy Jones, local member for Newtown East, and listened to their concerns about the centre’s future.
The Leader was also presented with a petition with over 3,100 signatures, asking the council not to close the Park Day Centre.
After his visit, Cllr Thomas said: “I would like to thank Cllr Joy Jones for inviting me to the centre and to the people and staff who took the time to come and speak to me. It was clear from my visit that the centre is highly thought of by those who use it and they are naturally concerned about its future.
“The council is facing huge financial pressures and needs to save £29.8m over the next three financial years. We need to save nearly a third of the adult social care budget over this time.
“The only way we can meet these saving targets is to review and remodel the services and this work has already started.
“We have recently carried out a number of listening and learning sessions with staff, service users, families and carers to further understand what matters most to people who access our services, and the staff who deliver these opportunities for older people.
“We have listened to these concerns and the feedback we have received will support the council in developing a range of options for a wider public consultation later this summer. The consultation on day time activities will give everyone in Powys an opportunity to have their say on the future of day centres.
“I will raise the concerns of the centre’s service users directly with our adult social care team.”
