Saturday Bulky Waste Collection For Machynlleth To End This Month
Machynlleth residents are being reminded that the final bulky waste collection takes place on the last Saturday in August, Powys County Council has said.
The Saturday bulky waste service, which has been operating fortnightly since the beginning of June, is being withdrawn by the council. The last day it will operate is Saturday 27 August from 9am to 12pm.
The decision to completely withdraw the service was taken by the council’s Cabinet at its meeting on 10 May, where it was agreed to reduce it to a fortnightly service for three months to begin with.
Cllr John Powell, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, said: “With the ever reducing budgets available to us, difficult decisions need to be made. Unfortunately we could no longer continue this service due to its high running costs.
“Once this service is withdrawn, it is important that householders fully utilise their kerbside collection service which will allow them to recycle a wide range of materials including plastics, cans, paper, cardboard, glass and food waste.
“Larger items such as garden waste, larger cardboard boxes, textile and Tetrapak can be recycled at the community recycling site at Maengwyn Street car park.
Householders can also take items to their nearest household waste and recycling centre, which is in Newtown.
The council can also collect bulky items such as furniture or large electrical items direct from households at a cost of £25 for up to three items on any one collection.
Alternatively, Phoenix Community Furniture will collect reusable items free of charge from residents in Powys.
