The Saturday bulky waste service in Machynlleth could be withdrawn, following a decision to be taken by cabinet at its meeting on 10 May. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

A report will be presented proposing that the Saturday bulky waste service in Machynlleth is reduced to fortnightly with a ban on residual waste in black sacks for a period of three months from June, with the service removed altogether from September. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The service was originally implemented following the closure of the household waste recycling centre in January 2015 to reduce the impact of this closure on residents who would now need to travel further to recycle their bulky waste. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Cllr John Powell, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, said: “The Saturday service has now been operating for over twelve months and it was always the intention to review this provision. There have been a number of service changes over the past twelve months, notably the introduction of three weekly residual refuse collections. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a large amount of black sacks being received on Saturday mornings in Machynlleth. It is important that residents use the weekly kerbside recycling service and recycle as much of their waste as possible. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“However, this will still leave the problem of providing an expensive Saturday service, which is why we are proposing to remove the service in September. It currently costs nearly £80k a year to run this service, which in these difficult financial times is not affordable. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“There are many other opportunities for residents to recycle their waste either through the kerbside recycling scheme or at the community recycling site and our Awareness Team will be available to help people fully utilise these facilities.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Residents are able to recycle a wide range of materials at the kerbside including plastics and cans, paper and card, glass and food waste every week. Larger items such as garden waste and large cardboard can be recycled at the community recycling site at Maengwyn Street car park. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
