War Memorials Photographic Competition
A free-to-enter photography competition is being launched by Powys County Council to help raise awareness about the county’s War Memorials project.
The council has obtained funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw and Brecon Beacons National Park Authority for the Powys War Memorials Project 2014-2018: ‘A Mark of Respect’ – a four-year project commemorating the centenary of World War 1.
“With the support of volunteers and local communities, this exciting project aims to record detailed information about the 300 or so known war memorials in Powys. Another aim of the project is to find ‘lost’ memorials throughout the county and catalogue them,” said Councillor Avril York, Cabinet Member for Regeneration.
There are about 300 known war memorials throughout Powys. They range from plaques to stone crosses, cenotaphs to stained glass windows and obelisks to statues.
Although we know of about 300 war memorials in Powys, it is thought that there are considerably more than this. One aim of the Powys War Memorials Project is to work with local communities, volunteers and others to find, record and catalogue all the World War 1 memorials in the county.
To help promote the project the council is holding a free-to-enter photography competition with £200 in prizes. The competition has two sections under 18 with a first prize worth £50 and over 18 with a first prize worth £75.
The theme for the competition is World War I memorials in Powys, with entrants asked to submit digital Jpeg photographs – there is no limit to how many, with a maximum size of 2mb.
Photographs have to show memorials that are in Powys and no photographs including people will be considered. Entries will be judged by a panel including a professional photographer, and representatives from the war memorial project, NPTC College, Church in Wales and the Royal British legion. The panel’s decision will be final.
The closing date for the competition is June 10, no entries received after the date can be considered. Entries to the competition will be featured in the Powys War Memorials Project.
