100th School To Receive Prestigious Health Award, Congratulated By Minister

Minister for Social Services and Public Health, Rebecca Evans, has congratulated a school in Powys for putting the health and wellbeing of all members of its community at the heart of everything it does. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Ysgol Gungrog Church in Wales Nursery and Infant School in Welshpool has become the 100th school in Wales to receive the prestigious Healthy Schools National Quality Award. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The National Quality Award is the highest accreditation a school can gain through the Welsh Network of Healthy School Schemes, which is run by Public Health Wales on behalf of the Welsh Government. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The award, which is independently assessed after a school has been involved in the scheme for nine years, is provided to schools that have proved they are committed to promoting physical, mental and social health and well-being to all members of the school and local community. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Minister for Social Services and Public Health, Rebecca Evans, today visited Ysgol Gungrog Church in Wales Nursery and Infant School to celebrate the school’s success and present them with a National Quality Award plaque. The Minister was also given a tour around the school by seven-year-old pupils, who showed her all the work they have been doing to help them stay healthy. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Rebecca Evans said: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“I am delighted that Ysgol Gungrog is promoting the health of all who learn, work and play here. The school is working hard to help pupils and staff make good decisions about the issues that affect their health, such as the food they eat, the amount of physical activity they take and not smoking. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Through working together and making sure everybody is involved, the school is helping to ensure its community is healthy, safe and happy. Young people are developing excellent habits, which I’m sure will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
