Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales cares for all kinds of treasures including a 200 million year old meat-eating Welsh dinosaur, 500 years’ worth of paintings from all over the world, an 1800’s steam locomotive, a valuable piece of moon rock from the Apollo 12 mission, and a real coal mine.
With more than 1.7million visitors per year to its seven sites, the Welsh Government is currently looking for highly committed, enthusiastic and motivated people to join Amgueddfa Cymru’s Board of Trustees and help ensure that the wide range of fascinating artefacts and collections it cares for can be appreciated and enjoyed by even more people.
There are three trustee vacancies to sit on the Board, which is in charge of setting the strategy and looking at ways to further strengthen and develop the seven varied national museums in Wales and the National Collections Centre.
Economy and Infrastructure Secretary, Ken Skates, who is also responsible for Culture, Heritage and the Arts in Wales said:
“From pre-historic fossils to memorabilia from the suffragette movement, our national museums boast a wide range of fascinating and culturally significant artefacts and we are keen to ensure Amgueddfa Cymru’s Board of Trustees continues to reflect the same diversity and interests of a modern Wales.
“These positions provide an excellent opportunity for people with passion and drive to get involved and help to shape and support the future of Wales’ national museums and make them as accessible, appealing and sustainable as possible.
“Whether you are an established leader or have never been a trustee before, this is a great opportunity to make a contribution towards improving public services in Wales while gaining rewarding and interesting experiences and making new contacts.”
Elisabeth Elias, President of Amgueddfa Cymru added:
“We are looking for committed individuals who are passionate about the future of Amgueddfa Cymru, and can therefore contribute to the continued strengthening and development of the organisation.
“They will sit alongside our existing trustees who work to retain the organisation’s international reputation and to ensure that our national museums continue to serve people from communities across Wales.”
Meetings of the Board are held four times a year. Three of these meeting are usually held in Cardiff, either at the National Museum Cardiff or at St Fagans National History Museum, and one at a location outside Cardiff.
The positions are voluntary and unpaid, but all reasonable expenses incurred on Museum business are reimbursed. The term of office for all Trustees is initially for four years and requires availability for a minimum of 12 days a year.
A series of open days are being held in north and south Wales over the coming weeks to help people find out more about Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales and these roles:
- On Thursday 15 September (2pm-6pm) and Saturday 24 September (10am-1pm) drop in sessions are being held at the National Museum Cardiff – there is no need to book, just turn up.
- Alternatively, if you would rather attend our open day at the National State Museum in Llanberis on Thursday 22 September (10am-5pm), please contact Elaine Cabuts on (029) 2057 3204 by midday on 19 September to book your place in advance.
The closing date for applications is 30 September 2016. All successful applicants will commence their roles on 1 January 2017.
