Funding To Help Young People & Teachers Show Racism The Red Card

The Welsh Government has announced £16,000 of funding to support the work of a leading education charity which uses sport to tackle racism. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The funding will enable Show Racism the Red Card to run 10 educational events at football, rugby and cricket clubs across Wales. Around 600 young people will benefit from the events, which will promote anti-racism messages and tackle homophobic bullying. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The sessions will also emphasise how sport can help people overcome personal difficulties and support their well-being, using the stories of sporting stars as inspiration. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The funding will also provide the opportunity for around 200 education practitioners to learn about ways to promote equality and tackle racism in schools. The training will help teachers build confidence in recognising and responding to racist incidents. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Minister for Social Services and Public Health, Rebecca Evans, said: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Education Secretary, Kirsty Williams, said: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“I want schools to be positive, inclusive environments for our young people to learn and develop. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“This funding will help equip teachers and other education practitioners with the skills and confidence to recognise and respond to racist incidents, as well as to promote equality throughout the school community.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We are grateful for the funding support being provided by the Welsh Government that will enable young people to explore these sensitive and important issues in our society. Using sporting role models will further enhance their learning experience and provide them the opportunity to discuss these topics at a time when hate crime remains problematic in Wales. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
