Minister Visits Digital Pioneer School

The Minister for Skills and Science, Julie James, has visited a school leading the way in developing their pupils’ digital skills. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

St Thomas Community Primary was instrumental in the development of the Welsh Government’s Digital Competence Framework (DCF), and is now playing an important part in its successful implementation. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Digital competence is a fundamental skill in our modern world. The DCF focuses on learners developing skills which are useful in everyday life and transferrable to the world of work. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The framework will embed digital skills and knowledge in everything pupils do as they progress through school, as teachers increasingly apply relevant digital skills in their lessons. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Minister for Skills and Science, Julie James said: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Pioneer Schools such as St Thomas are essential to the success of the Digital Competence Framework (DCF) and the wider new curriculum. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We are very grateful for their commitment and contribution to the development of the DCF. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The work done last year in developing the Framework and their ongoing work on developing supporting materials will help ensure the Framework remains relevant and responsive to teachers’ and pupils’ needs.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Russell Dwyer, Headteacher at St Thomas Community Primary added: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“In this day and age, the ability to be digitally competent is vital in order to maximise future opportunities in life and work. As a school we were honoured to contribute directly to the development of the DCF in Wales and we are excited to be driving forward its implementation, for the future success of our pupils.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
