​Demolition works to crumbling town centre building to begin

Demolition works to a dilapidated building on the main gateway into Holyhead town centre are to begin shortly in the interests of public safety. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Isle of Anglesey County Council have stepped in to ensure the safety of the public using lower Market Street, in responding to local community concerns regarding the very poor condition of 91-95 Market Street, formerly known as the Crown Restaurant. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Since necessary statutory consents have now been secured, the demolition works are ready to commence in the very near future and should be completed within a month. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The County Council’s Project Manager, Nathan Blanchard, who is co-ordinating the work, said, “Unfortunately the building has lain derelict for a number of years. Following advice from consultant Engineers who identified the condition of the building becoming critical, the Council has felt it necessary to undertake the demolition in the long term interest of public safety, following on from early work to protect the public in the short term.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We can only apologise for the inconvenience to town centre users, pedestrians, business and tenants in the vicinity while the work is ongoing and hope the matter can be speedily resolved in consultation with adjoining property owners, who have been helpfully cooperating with the Council.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The work is due to commence in the very near future by specialist demolition contractors Wye Valley Group of Hereford, advised by Ifan Rowlands of Cadarn Consulting Engineers and has been funded through the Welsh Government’s Viable and Vibrant Places (VVP) programme. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
