Beach Rubbish Celebrates Motӧrhead
Keep Wales Tidy’s Clean Coasts Week, working with Anglesey Council’s Waste Management Section, successfully cleaned up 10 beaches across Anglesey last week.
The rubbish collected was cleaned and used to create a tribute to Motӧrhead. Built with Lolly Sticks, bits of plastic, an old pallet and netting the tribute marks the passing of their lead singer Lemmy, who grew up on Anglesey. Hundreds of volunteers joined Clean Coasts Week, sponsored by McDonalds, including local schools, local Police and Friends of Anglesey Coastal Path.
While the weather was not kind to volunteers on Anglesey, they still came out in force to clean up 10 beaches across the Island. Gareth Owen, from Keep Wales Tidy, lead the clean up together with the Waste Management Section’s Promotional Team. This year, 160 volunteers not only helped to clean up the island, but celebrated the iconic band Motӧrhead whose lead singer Lemmy grew up in Benllech. “I’d like to thank all the volunteers who came to help make our beaches beautiful, cleaning up the litter that gets washed ashore over winter. A wide variety of materials were collected from lolly sticks to netting that filled 97 bags. It was good to see Motӧrhead fans taking to the beaches to help make a tribute to the band and in particular Lemmy. It has been a great week,” said Gareth.
Barry Owen, from Treaddur Bay, was one of the Motӧrhead fans who turned out to help build a tribute to the band. “I’ve been a Motӧrhead fan since I was a teenager and always enjoyed their music. I even had tickets to see them perform this Summer at the Download Festival. It was good to meet other Motӧrhead fans on the beach and help to build a tribute. I thought it was a good idea to get an Ace of Spades into the piece as that was one of the bands greatest hits and a particular favourite of mine,” said Barry.
“Clean Coasts Week has been a great success and we will be hanging the Motӧrhead tribute in the Council foyer to mark the band’s association with the Island and the passing of Lemmy who was loved by many on Anglesey. I’d also like to thank the people who came out to make the clean-up and tribute a success,” said Elin Owen, Senior Waste Management Officer.
