Planning Applications Reveal The Shape Of Things To Come, Say Rhyl Waterfront Developers

Developers behind plans for the transformation of Rhyl’s seafront have submitted two planning applications that will kick-start the £ multi-million investment in the town’s future. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The two applications, submitted by Neptune Developments, will see welcome improvements to parking and access to the Children’s Village and a major facelift for one of the resort’s most iconic landmarks, the Sky Tower. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Together, the two schemes will begin to realise the vision for a new family entertainment destination on the seafront as part of an even wider and more ambitious Waterfront Regeneration Project. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The first application will see two new pedestrian entrances formed into the Children’s Village Car Park from West Parade and the Sky Tower Car Park, which will provide better connectivity and easier access between the car park and the town centre. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A new flight of steps from the Fun Fair Level down to the Beachside promenade is also proposed, to create a new link between the waterfront developments and the beach. These works will be accompanied by improvements to the car park’s lighting. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The improvements underscore one of the project’s key aims, to better connect Rhyl’s visitor offer, making seafront attractions more inviting and accessible to people visiting the beach and town centre. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The second application proposes a complete make-over of the iconic Sky Tower, redecorating the exterior of Rhyl’s landmark structure and installing a feature lighting scheme to make the tower a visible statement of the town’s renewed confidence and regeneration. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Neptune’s Development Director, Rob Mason, said; ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The works to the Children’s Village car park are actually key to improving what is currently an underused asset. It will make access easier to an established attraction and will serve the new restaurant development that we creating next to the Vue Cinema as a future phase of the scheme” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Leader of Denbighshire, Councillor Hugh Evans OBE, Cabinet Lead Member for the Economy, said: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“This is another important milestone for Rhyl’s waterfront development. The upgrading of the currently underused Children’s Village car park and iconic Sky Tower is another piece of the regeneration jig-saw. This work is designed to complement the emerging proposals for the Culture and Hospitality Zone of the Rhyl Waterfront scheme. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Developments and improvements to the promenade will not only benefit Rhyl’s economy through increased footfall from visitors, but are also creating something to be enjoyed by residents of Rhyl, Denbighshire and wider North Wales communities. We’re investing to create a better town with a better quality and more enjoyable offer for everyone who lives, visits or does business in Rhyl.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The recent £3.5million funding received through the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable places scheme has allowed us to accelerate work on many elements of the scheme, including the demolition of the Sun Centre and upgrade of the Pavilion Theatre.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

If the planning consent is granted, it is intended that works will start around Christmas and be completed in the spring of 2017. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
