The 10th Big Dee Day, spanning the coast in both Wales and England, has been hailed a great success by Flintshire Rangers and coastal communities. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The annual Big Dee Day clean-up, organised by Flintshire Council, Cheshire West and Chester Council, the Environment Agency, Keep Wales Tidy and Natural Resources Wales proved to be bigger and better than ever for its 10 year anniversary. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Hundreds of volunteers from schools, community groups, organisations and businesses took part in a week of events from Tuesday 13 to Sunday 18 September to clean up and enhance the River Dee catchment area. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The result of these fantastic events meant that throughout the week, along the coastline from Prestatyn to Chester: ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

· 272 bags of litter were collected
· Over 10,000 bulbs were planted
· 40 tyres were removed
· Eight benches were painted
· 2 large scale waste issues identified as well as several smaller pollution risks. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Flintshire ranger, Tim Johnson, said: ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“We had volunteers out from McDonalds, Holywell scouts, Kingspan, RNLI, Connah’s Quay High School, Lysfasi College, Groundworks, Sustrans, Airbus and many more. The event wouldn’t work without this fantastic support we receive. This year we had new involvement from Warwick Chemicals, Toyota, and the organisation – University of the 3rd Age. This shows how the event is still growing and improving.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

This event was helped by sponsorships from Kingspan, Presthaven Sands, Abakhan and Rays Whippy ice cream van.
A video was created to celebrate the 10 years of running this event which can be found http://bit.ly/big-dee-HD – (high quality version) or http://bit.ly/big-dee-tablet – (full HD but smaller file) ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

If any individuals, companies, groups or organisations would like to get involved next year please contact Flintshire Countryside Services on 01352 703900. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
