Education Minister to open state-of-the-art £6.4million school in Shotton
Education Minister, Huw Lewis will officially open Wales’ latest multi-million pound, state-of-the-art school in Shotton today (Monday 29th February).
Ysgol TÅ· Ffynnon Primary School is a new £6.4million development delivered through the Welsh Government’s Transitional Funding Programme. The project was funded in partnership between the Welsh Government and Flintshire County Council with the Welsh Government providing £4.5million of the total.
The Welsh Government’s Transitional Funding Programme is the successful forerunner to the 21st Century Schools and Education Capital Programme, which will provide investment of £1.4 billion delivered in partnership with local authorities to support the rebuild and refurbishment of over 150 schools and colleges across Wales.
The ultra modern school replaces Shotton Infants and Taliesin Junior School and accommodates 245 primary and 30 nursery pupils. It was built on the site of the existing junior school by Wrexham based Read Construction Holdings Ltd.Â
The new school building has nine classrooms and two resource classes for children with moderate learning difficulties, a nursery, assembly hall, studio, and kitchen and community facilities. In the outside space, there will be landscaped play and recreation areas.
Education Minister Huw Lewis said:
“It gives me great pleasure to officially open Ysgol Ty Ffynon. Schools like this are a real example of what the Welsh Government, in partnership with local government, is trying to achieve through our investment programmes. We are absolutely committed to providing the best learning environments that will inspire teachers, pupils and the wider community”.
Councillor Aaron Shotton said: “The new school has been built to a high standard, to provide modern, first class facilities and the best learning opportunities for our children. It is the result of the Flintshire programme to amalgamate infant and junior schools. This official opening heralds a new era in delivering quality education for the county.”
Nia Goldsmith, Headteacher, said: “The pupils are so fortunate to have a wonderful 21st century school with modern up to date technology and resources. Both pupils and staff are delighted to be working in such excellent surroundings and hope that the local community will work with the school to keep the facilities in pristine condition.”

Early collaboration with the supply chain and client resulted in the project being awarded Exemplar status by Constructing Excellence Wales as a model of best practice. Read Construction’s team has delivered an exemplary learning environment for the pupils and teaching staff at the new school.”
