Residents in Flintshire have their say on waste reduction and recycling plans

AROUND 4,000 residents have had their say on new plans to reduce waste and improve recycling rates in Flintshire.
A waste consultation saw 3,888 responses as of Wednesday (December 21) since the launch on December 1, with the number still increasing.
The consultation is about the new draft Resources and Waste strategy which aims to see more of our household waste reduced, reused and recycled.
Flintshire County Council is at risk of being fined more than £1.1 million for failing to hit Welsh Government recycling targets in 2021/22 and 2022/23, as well as further potential large fines in 2023/24 and beyond.
The new strategy, if adopted, aims to improve recycling rates in Flintshire from 61% to 70% and deliver the council’s ambitions of becoming net carbon zero by 2030.
Residents are still being encouraged to take part until January 12, 2024.
Councillor Dave Hughes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Streetscene and the Regional Transport Strategy, said: “The objectives set in the draft Resources and Waste and Strategy demonstrates Flintshire’s continued commitment towards creating a sustainable, circular economy for the future. How we manage waste affects everyone who lives and works here, so it is vital that we hear your views on this new plan.
“The draft strategy sets out our aims for the next six years and will guide our resource and waste service through a crucial period where we will be taking urgent action to reduce carbon emissions to net carbon zero by 2030. The strategy sets out how we plan to achieve Welsh Government targets to reuse, recycle and compost over 70% of the waste we collect, while also providing cost-effective services and meeting our budgetary requirements.
