A Service To Close The Great War Memorial Garden

A short public service will be held at Caernarfon Castle at 2.15pm on Sunday, 20 November to mark the closing of the Great War Memorial Garden which was opened there in July to mark a century since the Battle of Mametz Wood during the First World War, to pay tribute to the 4,000 Welsh soldiers killed or wounded in the battle. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

This coincides with the end of the “Weeping Window” exhibition at the Castle. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The garden has been an enormous success. Over 10,000 crosses have been laid since July and over £51,000 raised for the Poppy Appeal. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Great War Remembrance Garden was opened on 7 July 2016 by the Lord-Lieutenant, Mr Edmund S Bailey, and was established with the support of Gwynedd Council, the RWF Museum and Cadw. It has been very ably maintained throughout by volunteers from the Caernarfon Veteran Association. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
