Green Flag Community Award Goes To Dwyfor Gardening Project
Keep Wales Tidy has unveiled this year’s Green Flag Award winners – the international mark of a quality park or green space.
A record-breaking 83 community managed green spaces in Wales have met the high standard needed to receive the prestigious Green Flag Community Award, more than double the number of winners in 2015. The list of winners include the Dwyfor Gardening Project at Canolfan Hamdden Dwyfor, Pwllheli.
Councillor Mair Rowlands, Gwynedd Councillor Cabinet Member for Healthy Gwynedd said:
“Dwyfor Gardening Project is extremely proud to earn the right to fly the Green Flag Community Award at Canolfan Hamdden Dwyfor, Pwllheli in recognition of their excellent facilities and commitment to delivering great quality green space.”
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Green Flag Award scheme, which is delivered in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy with support from Welsh Government. It is judged by green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.
Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy said:
“We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. Our parks and green spaces play an important role in our communities, but their benefits are often taken for granted. As well as providing havens for wildlife, having accessible, high quality green space can have a big impact of our health and well-being, and local economy.
“The success of community sites is due to the commitment and dedication of local volunteers and it is thanks to them that we have so many fantastic facilities available on our doorstep. I’d like to congratulate all our winners and thank everyone who is involved in raising the standard of our green spaces.”
