Pupils from Ysgol Glan y Mor, Pwllheli, recently took part in a number of Tidy Towns litter-picking activities around the town. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The pupils involved in the school’s annual Activities Week, which occurs annually at the end of the school term, and gives the pupils an opportunity to take part in extracurricular projects in the wider community. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

In total nine Year 10 pupils took part in the litter-picking, concentrating their efforts on school grounds and along the numerous paths around Lon Cob Bach. One group also went along the prom, dune and shoreline collecting rubbish which had been washed up and blown onto adjacent areas. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The equipment for the activity, such as litter-pickers, gloves and high visibility vests was supplied by Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Towns scheme, which is funded by Welsh Government. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The pupils, who all found the experience rewarding and worthwhile, would like to ask that people act responsibly and recycle their rubbish or place it in one of the town’s many waste bins. They also asked Tidy Towns if they could keep the litter-pickers at the school as they hope to carry out further work in the near future. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for the environment, Councillor John Wynn Jones, said: “The Activities Week is a great opportunity for our young people to learn about local environmental issues, and when the children can also contribute to improving that environment then it makes it all the more worthwhile. An excellent effort by all those involved at Ysgol Glan y Mor and Tidy Towns.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Local County Councillor Hefin Underwood, added: “I’d like to thank the pupils for their excellent efforts in helping to tidy up this part of Pwllheli. Litter is so unsightly in this beautiful area and often collects on paths by Lon Cob Bach and on the prom and dune areas. I’d also like to thank the staff at Ysgol Glan y Mor for their excellent initiative with the pupils.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

To report an environmental crime, such as littering or fly-tipping, in strictest confidence, you may call Gwynedd Council’s Street Enforcement team on 01766 771000, e-mail streetenforcement@gwynedd.gov.uk or contact the Council via www.gwynedd.gov.uk clicking on “Report a Problem”. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Tidy Towns is sponsored by the Welsh Government. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
