Temporary Closure Of Bangor Crematorium Chapel
The chapel and main (upper) car-park at Bangor Crematorium will be temporarily closed between 5 and 24 September so that essential repair work can be carried out to the building and some asbestos materials removed.
Local funeral directors are being notified of this unavoidable temporary closure and the need for them to put in place alternative funeral arrangements for the three-week period.
Undertakers are being advised that funeral services cannot be held at the crematorium chapel from 5 to 24 September, but that cremations can proceed at the facility provided that funeral directors can make arrangements to host funeral services at alternative locations.
As a further measure, crematoriums at Colwyn Bay and Aberystwyth have been informed that the temporary closure of the chapel facility at Bangor Crematorium is likely to result in additional funerals at their facilities.
Gwynedd Council Cabinet Member, Councillor John Wynn Jones said:
“Bangor Crematorium works with funeral directors to provide a professional service for families during what is undeniably a difficult time.
“The facility has been in operation since 1973, and as is the case for crematoriums of this age by now repair work is often needed to keep the facility up to the required standard.
“Every effort is made to minimise such work on the efficient running of the facility, however on this occasion the scale and location of the work combined with the need to remove asbestos materials means that we unfortunately have no option but to temporarily close the chapel facility.
“Funeral directors are being notified and informed of the alternative options available to them, and we will be continuing to work closely with them wherever possible to meet the needs of families who have lost a loved one.”
During the temporary closure of Bangor Crematorium, members of the public who wish to visit the Garden of Remembrance can continue to do so, however parking provision will be limited due to the essential repair work.
Gwynedd Council keeps a register of all public buildings which contain asbestos materials. Such materials do not pose a danger to the public when left undisturbed as part of the fabric of a building. However, when work needs to be carried out to buildings that contain asbestos, approved specialist contractors are commissioned to safely remove and dispose of the material in accordance with relevant national guidelines.
