‘Use It Or Lose It’ Plea As Pest Control Unit Is Spared

Gwynedd Council’s pest control service has been spared for the time being – but needs to generate more income to ensure its long-term future. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Welcoming the Council’s recent decision to retain the Pest Control Unit, Councillor Dafydd Meurig, the Cabinet Member for Planning and Regulation, said that the Unit was doing vital work. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“In view of the need to make financial savings in all aspects of the Council’s activity, we must look carefully at each service in turn,” he explained. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“And as the Pest Control Unit costs some tens of thousands of pounds to the Council annually, we had to consider a proposal to abolish it. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“However, I’m delighted to be able to say that the Council has decided to retain it, as the Unit delivers a vitally important service to the public, as well as to other Council services such as schools and residential homes. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“Losing the service could have serious implications for public health, and it is therefore right and proper that the Council do everything in their power to retain it. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“In order to secure its long-term future however, it is vital that the Unit generate more income from its services. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“It is also vital that Gwynedd residents make full use of it. If they don’t use the service, then they run the risk of losing it.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The Pest Control Unit offers free advice on how to deal with pest problems and charges fees for controlling those pests that are within its remit. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Among the most common creatures that the Unit can control are rats, mice, squirrels, beetles, fleas and various insects. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“Our fees are very reasonable compared with the rates charged by private companies,” said Councillor Dafydd Meurig. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“It is a reliable service of a high standard that has earned the public’s trust over the years for the way it deals effectively with situations that can cause a great deal of anxiety to sufferers. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“If you have any pest problems, go the Gwynedd Council’s website on https://www.gwynedd.llyw.cymru/en/Residents/Dogs-and-environmental-health/Pest-control/Pest-control.aspx where there is a full list of pests that we control as well as details on the fees we charge on domestic and commercial users. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“You can make an online application, be that for control or for free advice or to report a pest on somebody else’s property, or alternatively, you can also phone us on 01766 771000. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“Once we receive your enquiry we will aim to call you within two working hours to discuss the next step.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
