Council Thanks Community Council For Generous Pledge To Crowdfunding Campaign
A community council has shown its support for a campaign aiming to preserve a series of veterans’ standards with a pledge of £100.
Offa Community Council made a £100 pledge to Wrexham Council’s crowdfunding drive to save the standards of four Wrexham-based veterans associations.
The community council voted to make the pledge at a meeting in March.
The campaign to protect the standards was launched at the end of January, and has already raised more than £3,000 of its £12,000 target.
The four veterans associations represented by the standards are the Burma Star Veterans Association, the Normandy Veterans Association, the Eighth Army Veterans Association, and the Korea Veterans Association.
Cllr John Williams, Chairman of Offa Community council, said: “We thought the fundraising campaign to save the standards was an incredibly important cause, and wanted to do what we could to contribute, on behalf of all those represented by the standards who may have come from the Offa area and gone on to fight in the Second World War.
“My fellow community councillors and I hope our £100 pledge will help Wrexham Council reach its £12,000 target so that we might have these all-important standards restored and preserved.”
The pledge follows similar pledges made by community councils at Gwersyllt, Rhos, Minera, Broughton, Llangollen, Rossett and Acton.
Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities and Partnerships, said: “We’re very pleased that the Offa Community Council has joined other community councils in pledging funds to this very worthy cause, and hope to see others join them.
“The crowdfunding campaign has already raised a significant amount of money and seen a lot of generosity from the people of Wrexham, but with the deadline for funding at the end of June, we’re keen to keep it in the public eye and do all we can to ensure the fundraising target is met.”
Cllr David Griffiths, Armed Forces Champion for Wrexham Council, said: “I hope the people of Wrexham continue to support the crowdfunding campaign to protect the standards with the same enthusiasm they have already shown.
“We are a military town and we want to do everything we can to support, honour and remember those who have sacrificed so much on our behalf.”
