Green Light Given for Science and Engineering Facilities Upgrade at Wrexham University

PLANS to improve science and engineering facilities at Wrexham University have been given the green light.
The university applied to Wrexham Council in January to carry out internal refurbishment works to its main Plas Coch campus building.
The proposals sought to modernise science and engineering laboratory spaces within the building’s ‘C-corridor’.
According to documents lodged with the local authority, the work will result in the demolition of several internal partition walls to make way for larger academic spaces.
Planning officials have now approved the scheme which relates to the main Grade II-listed building off Mold Road.
A design and access statement submitted by planning agents Cassidy and Ashton on behalf of the university stated: “The proposed works will allow the existing provision to be brought up to modern day standards in a manner that is sympathetic to its historic character and appearance and the university’s long term sustainable use and reputation.
“The significance of the listed building has been considered in the design of these proposals, placing the priority to preserve and enhance its heritage value central to the scheme.
“The proposals concern internal alterations with a view to modernise and enhance the learning facilities, removing previous modern additions.
“The purpose of the proposed works is to locate engineering faculty into the existing building.
“The proposal looks to make best use of underutilised rooms whilst improving the standard of facilities and its connections with the remainder of the building and facilities.”
The proposals form part of the university’s wider Campus 2025 strategy which will see a total of £80m spent to improve its facilities.
Work already completed includes the creation of new teaching and social spaces in the Plas Coch campus, as well as a healthcare simulation centre.
Upgrades have also been carried out to upgrade the university’s school of creative arts on Regent Street.
Future plans will see the construction of a new state-of-the art engineering building at the Plas Coch campus and a new learning gateway facility. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
