‘Crucial Crew’ Workshops Teach Valuable Life Lessons
During the last month, around 1,400 primary school pupils from across Bridgend County Borough have been taught valuable life lessons at ‘Crucial Crew’ workshops that have been held in the Bettws Community Club.
Organised by Bridgend County Borough Council in partnership with ‘Resolve it’ and a number of other local organisations, the sessions have covered important topics such as road safety, bullying, personal safety and awareness, the dangers of power lines and tips on responsible dog ownership.
The final sessions have been taking place this week, and Councillor Huw David, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Deputy Leader, said: “The annual Crucial Crew initiative is aimed at year six pupils to help prepare them for new experiences as they grow older in the big wide world.
“These 10 and 11-year-olds will be moving up to secondary school in September, so it’s a vulnerable age when they are starting to become a bit more independent. It is therefore important to educate them on the dangers and temptations that surround them and the impact that such things can have on their lives and the lives of others. The Crucial Crew sessions have helped the children become a bit more street-wise and understand how to deal with a number of potentially unsafe situations.
“For example, the session with Western Power taught them about the dangers around electricity, a road safety presentation re-iterated the importance of wearing a helmet when cycling, while they also learnt how to deal with conflict. The presentations were all extremely informative and are vital lessons for the children to learn.”
Organisations making presentations at this year’s Crucial Crew workshops included Western Power, Network Rail, Food Standards Agency, RNLI, SeaQuest, WCADA Alcohol, Resolve It, Dogs Trust and Bridgend County Borough Council.
