Pen-Y-Bont Are The Road Safety Quiz Kings!

Pupils from Pen-y-Bont Primary School have shown that their road safety knowledge is streets ahead of the rest by winning Bridgend County Borough Council’s annual road safety quiz final at the Civic Offices in Bridgend. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Organised in partnership with South Wales Police, the final involved year five pupils from twelve schools tackling questions on general road safety, road signs and an observation round. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Pen-y-Bont emerged victorious to take their first ever road safety quiz title, while Pencoed Primary School finished as runners’ up. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Congratulating the pupils, Councillor Huw David, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Deputy Leader, said: “Well done to Pen-y-Bont and all of the other schools that competed in the final. Each of the twelve schools had already made it through a gruelling qualifying round so all of the children taking part in the final did really well to get that far. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The annual quiz has been running for over 20 years now, and does wonders to raise awareness of road safety among the county borough’s youngest residents. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Each of the quiz participants has demonstrated an excellent knowledge of road safety and it is hoped that they share that knowledge by spreading the safety messages far and wide among their friends and family.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Road safety awareness is also taught in Bridgend County Borough’s schools via ‘kerbcraft’ lessons in year two while year six pupils have the opportunity of cycling safety training. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Pen-y-Bont Primary School team will now go forward to compete in the South Wales regional road safety quiz final in the summer. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
