The Cwm a Mynydd Rural Development Programme team are once again joining up with Public Services teams from Caerphilly County Borough Council and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council to clean up common land. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The Common Sense clean up events will take place on Thursday 2nd March at Gelligaer and Merthyr Common starting from 9:30am at Fochriw Community Centre and on Friday 24th March at Bedwellty Common starting from 9:30am at Markham Community Centre. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Groups from Caerphilly County Borough Council and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council together with Keep Wales Tidy, Gelligaer and District Young Farmers Club, Biffa Waste, Gwent Police and the Probation Service will assist with the clean ups to help tackle the issue of fly tipping on common land in both county boroughs. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The Common Sense clean up aims to address the issue of fly tipping on common land within Caerphilly county borough and Merthyr Tydfil county borough, as general rubbish and more dangerous materials such as asbestos being dumped are a blot on the beautiful landscape and can also have serious effects on livestock that call the common land their home. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Cllr Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Sustainable Development said: “The pilot Common Sense event in 2016 was a great success, with over 250 bags of rubbish and recycling being cleared from common land, as well as tonnes of fly-tipping. The initiative has also helped to raise awareness of the issue of fly tipping and littering on common land. More clean up events have been arranged in the area to continue tackling the issue”. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

To report instances of fly tipping within Caerphilly county borough please contact Caerphilly Street Pride on 01443 866566. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The ‘Common Sense’ clean-up initiative forms part of the environmental work delivered by Caerphilly County Borough Council to achieve the requirements of Welsh Government’s Well Being of Future Generations (Wales) Act. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
