A proposed scheme to carry out improvement works on a key strategic roundabout at Pwll-y-Pant, Caerphillly (known as the Cedar Tree roundabout) is to be postponed in order to avoid clashing with another major scheme. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Caerphilly county borough council is still awaiting a formal funding decision from Welsh Government about the Pwll-y-Pant scheme and it is unclear at the moment when this will be received. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Over recent weeks the council has received confirmation from Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr County Borough Councils of their intention to carry out major improvement works on the Fiddler’s Elbow Viaduct at nearby Abercynon this summer. The viaduct is one of the main arterial routes in the area and the works are likely to lead an increased volume of traffic using other routes, including the Pwll-y-Pant roundabout. The exact start date for the viaduct works is yet to be agreed, but they are anticipated to take around three months to complete. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

As a result the council has decided to postpone the proposed highway improvement at Pwll-y-Pant in order avoid any additional disruption to traffic and road users. It is hoped that, subject to securing the necessary funding, the proposed works can proceed in the summer of 2017. In the meantime the council intends to undertake maintenance works to the roundabout to refresh the road markings in response to concerns over highway safety. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

In addition, minor works will also be carried out to the westbound approach to the Trecenydd roundabout to alter the lane markings to improve the efficiency of its operation. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
