Caerphilly Cracks Down On Fly Tipping
Caerphilly County Borough Council recently cleared masses of fly tipping from Gelligaer Common, near Fochriw.
The council is reminding residents and businesses that each individual case of fly tipping is fully investigated and often lead to successful prosecutions of individuals involved. Some of the items recently dumped at Fochriw have been traced to businesses operating outside of the county borough, whilst others including plastic bottles and newspapers would be collected at the kerbside.
It is each individual’s responsibility to dispose of their waste properly, a number of residents have recently faced prosecutions after paying non-licensed disposal companies who are not disposing of waste correctly, with it often being fly-tipped. Offenders of fly-tipping can face fines of up to £50,000 and / or imprisonment.
Cllr. Nigel George, Cabinet member for Community and Leisure Services said: “Fly tipping is an offence that Caerphilly County Borough Council takes very seriously. The illegal disposal of waste has many implications, ruining areas of beauty whilst putting wildlife and livestock at risk. There are financial implications with the cost of clearing waste and making an area safe once more. Our Environmental Health team will always fully investigate fly tipping and have successfully secured many prosecutions. I would encourage any members of the public who witnesses fly tipping, or have any information to contact the council so that we can continue to effectively clamp down on those who feel they have the right to misuse our green spaces.”
