Caerphilly Pupils Visit Crucial Crew
Over the past 3 weeks over 2,000 year six pupils from 67 primary schools across Caerphilly county borough have enjoyed learning important life skills at Crucial Crew.
The annual event was held at Blackwood RFC and gave pupils the chance to meet with a number of organisations in a fun, engaging environment. The sessions are organised by RESOLVE it in partnership with Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Road safety Team.
The Road safety team gave pupils important advice about how wearing a seatbelt can save a life, and explained why they should be worn even on the shortest of journeys. Staff from the Food Standards Agency highlighted the need for good hygiene when preparing food and the serious consequences of food poisoning. Youth counselling and support service Meic Cymru offered pupils the chance to learn more about the services they offer to advise and help young people who feel they need somebody to talk to in confidence.
There were also workshops with Western Power Distribution about the importance of staying safe around electricity, and never playing by pylons. South wales fire and Rescue Service were on hand with an interactive game of snakes and ladders which highlighted the dangers of deliberate fires, and how to report such crimes. There was also advice from Caerphilly Council about the importance of effectively recycle household and food waste.
Cllr. Derek Havard, Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong learning said: “Crucial Crew delivers many important messages to young people, including road safety, food hygiene and fire safety. I am pleased that Caerphilly County Borough Council continues to support the event to ensure that pupils across the county experience these highly important, enjoyable workshops. I would also like to thank the partner agencies who give their time to make the project possible.”
