Caerphilly Sports Development Officer Represents Wales At The European Touch Rugby Championships

A Caerphilly Sports Development Officer has claimed silver in the European Touch Rugby Championships while representing Wales Women. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Rhiannon Wade, a Sports Development Officer for Sport Caerphilly recently represented Wales during the European Touch Rugby Championships held in Jersey, where the team came home with a silver medal. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Wales competed against 8 other teams within their pool: England, Belgium, Netherlands, Guernsey, France, Italy, Scotland and Germany, where Wales were victorious until being narrowly defeated by England in the final of the tournament with an end score of 4-3. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Rhiannon said: “I really enjoyed representing Wales Women out in Jersey. We were so unlucky to narrowly miss out in the final but I’m proud to be part of such a great squad and we’ll come out fighting in the next competition”. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Rhiannon has also represented Wales Women in the World Cup in Australia during 2015 and previously at the European Championships in Swansea (2014). ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said: “Congratulations to Rhiannon and her team-mates for achieving a silver medal during the European Touch Rugby Championships. The team faced tough competition and I am delighted that they made it all the way to the final”. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
