Caerphilly Welcomes Positive Progress Report
Caerphilly county borough council has received a positive annual ‘health check’ from Wales Audit Office (WAO) as part of a major review into the way the local authority is run.
Each year the WAO prepares a key inspection document called an ‘Annual Improvement Report’ (AIR) which summarises the audit work undertaken at the council on behalf of the Auditor General.
The purpose of the report is to track performance against the council’s statutory duty under the Local Government Measure (Wales) 2009.
The Auditor General believes that Caerphilly is likely to meet the requirements of the Measure during 2016-17 because the authority has complied with its improvement planning and reporting duties.
In terms of budget management, it was reported that the council has effective financial control arrangements and a track record of achieving savings in advance.
Importantly, the Auditor General did not make any formal recommendations for improvement at the council based on the findings of the review.
Cllr Keith Reynolds, Leader of the Council said, “This report clearly highlights how well the authority is being run and we welcome the findings. I would like to thank staff at all levels across the organisation for helping us to deliver quality services in our community, despite these tough economic times.
“We are not complacent and we recognise that there are still areas that need improvement, but we are definitely in a strong position as we face the challenges that lie ahead,” he added.
The report was presented to Councillors at a meeting of Council on Tuesday 22nd November and can be found here.
