Pupils at Deri Primary School have used modern technology to present their findings about the history of Deri. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The whole school embarked on a project called ‘Deri Ni’ which focused on five different areas of village life from the past including schools, religion, everyday life, railways and coal mining. The children studied census material, looked at photographs, interviewed local residents, painted pictures and wrote fictional accounts as people from the past based on their findings. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The findings have been transferred to a number of ‘i-beacons’ that are now located in five areas along the old Deri railway line. Members of the public with the ‘i-beacon’ app can access the pupil’s work when they walk past the beacons. The initiative was launched to the local community in June. Pupils and parents walked the ‘history treasure hunt’ taking part in a fun quiz based on the information provided from the children’s work. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Parent Mrs. Vaughan said: “There is so much information on the ‘i-beacons’, what a fantastic resource for the community to view’. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Cllr. Derek Havard, Cabinet Member for Education & Lifelong Learning said: “The work undertaken by the pupils of Deri primary School is brilliant. It is great to see a school sharing such an important project with the local community, I would encourage local residents and visitors to use the ‘i-beacons’ and support their local school.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

If you would like to access the children’s work down load the free app ‘Locly Sandbox’ and walk along the Cwm Darren Footpath through the village of Deri and the children’s work on the History of Deri will magically appear ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
