Apprentices working on housing projects across the Caerphilly county borough came together for breakfast on Friday 10th March to celebrate Apprenticeship Week Cymru 2017. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The event was hosted by Caerphilly Homes, the department responsible for housing at Caerphilly County Borough Council. Around 30 apprentices attended the event; ranging from apprentices working with the council’s in-house Housing Repair Operations team to those working with contractors to deliver the council’s £200 million Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS) improvement programme. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Representatives from the council’s housing association partners were also at the event, in recognition of the additional apprenticeship positions being created through new affordable housing developments in the county borough. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

A Council spokesperson said “There is a significant amount of investment being made into housing in the county borough at the moment; from the WHQS council home improvement programme to a number of new affordable housing sites. As well as providing high quality affordable homes, the council is also committed to ensuring such investment is maximised to deliver wider benefits for the county borough; including the creation of jobs and training opportunities such as apprenticeships. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Apprentices are a golden opportunity for individuals to gain qualifications and skills, along with invaluable hands-on experience. They also benefit the council, as an employer, by helping us ensure we have a workforce with the right skills, knowledge and experience to deliver high quality services for our residents.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

In 2016/17 Caerphilly County Borough Council received £7,340,000 from the Welsh Government Major Repairs Allowance which contributed to WHQS improvements. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
