Flying The Flag For Commonwealth Day
Caerphilly County Borough Council marked Commonwealth Day with a flag raising ceremony at the council Headquarters, Penallta House.
A short dedication and flag-raising ceremony was led by the Mayor Cllr Dianne Price, Deputy Leader of Council, Cllr David Poole, Cabinet Members and members of the South Wales Armed Forces Day Committee.
This year marks 40 years since Commonwealth Day became a global celebration. The day is celebrated with all 52 countries of the Commonwealth proudly flying the flag as a sign of unity.
Cllr Price said, “I’d like to thank all those who joined us for this special event. Commonwealth Day is a day of unity and by flying the flag we are demonstrating that Caerphilly county borough is proud to show its support”.
Before the flag was formally flown, a short affirmation was read by the Deputy Leader Cllr Dave Poole, “Joining together as members of one worldwide Commonwealth community, and valuing the personal dignity and worth of every citizen, we raise this flag as a symbol of the ties of kinship and affinity that we cherish.
We draw inspiration from our diversity, and the opportunities for working together, as a rich source of wisdom and a powerful influence for good in the world. We affirm our commitment to upholding the values set out in the Commonwealth Charter, to serving one another in a spirit of respect and understanding, and to advancing development, democracy and cooperation locally, nationally and internationally.”
