June performances at Blackwood Miners Institute

Blackwood Miners’ Institute promises a whole host of fantastic shows to please a variety of audiences this June, with BROADWAY! – a Night at the Musicals, Mark Thompson – The Show at the End of the Universe and Woody Guthrie – The Long Road to Peekskill all promising to entertain. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Welsh Musical Theatre Orchestra makes a welcome return to Blackwood Miners’ Institute on Thursday 9th June at 7:30pm with their new show BROADWAY! – a Night at the Musicals. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Performed with a full orchestra and singers who have appeared in over 30 West End and number 1 UK shows, this new production includes favourites from famous Broadway musicals including Wicked and The Phantom of the Opera. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Tickets cost £16.50 for adults and £15.50 for concessions. Premium tickets are available for £23.50, which includes a programme and drink. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Blackwood Miners’ Institute will host Mark Thompson on Friday 10th June at 7:30pm for an evening of astronomy. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Mark Thompson – The Show at the End of the Universe is presented by the co-host of Stargazing LIVE and regular contributor to The Sky at Night and Astronomy Now (national astronomy magazine), who brings astronomy into the 21st century with a bang. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

In this captivating show, Mark will tackle questions that continue to perplex even the greatest minds and turn them into easily digestible chunks with the help of some amazing demonstrations. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Mark Thompson – The Show at the End of the Universe is not recommended for young children and is suitable for children 12+ ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Next up is Woody Guthrie: The Long Road to Peekskill, a ‘live documentary’ which comes to Blackwood Miners’ Institute on Monday 13th June at 7:30pm. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Will Kaufman, recognised as the world’s leading authority on Woody Guthrie, will tell the story of Guthrie’s transformation from a youthful Oklahoma racist to the ardent anti-racist champion who, along with many others, risked his life holding the line against American fascism during the notorious Peekskill riots of 1949. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The show highlights the blending of music and radical politics that marks Guthrie’s powerful work. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
